Orchard, my orchard, orchard ploughed
all pruned and daisy-strewed.

You’ve flower beds all around,
and marjoram in the ground,
an apple tree dead centre,
its trunk fit to splinter.
A youth some apples filched,
and its leaves they did wilt
and the apple tree sighed,
at the gardener cried:
– Where master who ploughs me,
watering mistress be ye?
My apples they will steal,
and you’ll only find peel.

Περιβόλι μ’ οργωμένο

Περιβό- περιβόλι μου, περιβόλι μ’ οργωμένο,
περιβόλι μ’ οργωμένο, μαργαριταροσπαρμένο.

Έχεις γύρω-γύρω αλτάνες1, και στη μέση μαντζουράνες
έχεις μια μηλιά στη μέση που βεργολυγάει να πέσει
πάει ο νιος να κόψει μήλα και μαραίνονται τα φύλλα
κι η μηλιά αναστενάζει, τον περιβολάρη κράζει.
Πού ’σαι αφέντη που μ’ ορίζεις, και κυρά που με ποτίζεις
θα μ’ αρπάξουνε τα μήλα, και θα βρείτε μόν’ τα φύλλα.
