’twas Palm Saturday I remember.
Palm Saturday it was, Saint Lazarus’ day
and the air was thick with manly sobs
and women’s lamentations.
’Tis not the killing pricked their tears,
and ’twas not murder neither;
they’re crying for they’ve no more bread,
and hunger shows no mercy.

Σαββάτο μέρα πέρασα από το Μεσολόγγι
κι ήταν Σαββά- γεια σας παιδιά, κι ήταν Σαββάτο των Βαγιών.

Κι ήταν Σαββάτο των Βαγιών, Σαββάτο τ’ Αϊ-Λαζάρου
κι ακούω αντρίκια κλάματα, γυναίκεια μοιολόγια.
Δεν κλαίνε για το σκοτωμό, δεν κλαίνε για το φόνο,
μόν’ κλαίν’ που σώσαν το ψωμί κι η πείνα δε βαστιέται.
