They went up to the water’s edge and walked along the beach,
they picked up little pebbles and they filled their aprons with them,
they threw the pebbles at the sea, they threw them at the waves.
Oh, you are heartless, wicked sea, your waves all bitterness.
Why are your fish so good to eat and you so venomous?
Don’t put the blame on me, the sea, and don’t blame me, the wave,
but blame the builder of the boats.

Κινήσανε τρεις λυ- μωρέ, λυγερές
και τρεις, μωρέ, και τρεις μαυροματούσες
τουμπουρλού και πάν’ μωρέ, τουμπουρλού, και πάν’
τουμπουρλού και πάν’ την άκρη το γιαλό
και πάν’ την άκρη το γιαλό και πάν’ την άμμον άμμο
και χαλικάκια μάζευαν και στην ποδιά τα βάζουν
πετροβολάν τη θάλασσα, πετροβολάν το κύμα.
Μωρή κακούργα θάλασσα και πικροκυματούσα
γιατ’ είν’ τα ψάρια σου γλυκά και ’σύ ’σαι φαρμακούσα.
Δε φταίω ’γώ η θάλασσα, δε φταίω ’γώ το κύμα
μόν’ φταίει ο πρωτομάστορας που φτιάνει τα καράβια.
