Notes
A free melody, in which the player improvizes in different related scales. Here in the so-called niaventi scale.
The violin came to Greece during the latter part of the 18th century and gradually replaced the simpler lyre as a stringed instrument. We do not know whether formerly it was tuned differently from an ordinary western violin. The scales, which nowadays have Turkish or Arabic names, have their exact equivalent in the Byzantine tonality, just as all their names can be found in the Byzantine note system with a somewhat more complicated designation.
Recording information
Recorded in a studio, in 1979.
