We have here a piece of impressive beauty, but one which is the result of a rather curious evolution. In fact the miroloi (lament) was originally a polyphonic song performed during funeral ceremonies and particularly during the funeral wake. In its present form the piece contains several elements which recall its origins, such as for example the imitation by the instru ments of the voices of the keening women of earlier times. Today the lament is a kind of 'instrumental song' which is performed to mark the beginning of the joyful celebrations at a wedding.

Nous avons ici un morceau d'une beauté impressionnante, mais qui est le résultat d'une assez curieuse évolution. En effet, le miroloï (lamentation) était initialement un chant polyphonique que l'on interprétait lors des cérémonies funèbres et, en particulier, pendant que l'on veillait le mort. Dans sa forme actuelle le morceau contient plu sieurs éléments qui rappellent ses ori gines, comme par exemple l'imitation, par les instruments, des voix des pleureuses d'autrefois. Aujourd'hui, la lamentation est une sorte de "chant instrumental" que l'on interprète pour marquer le début des réjouissances lors d'un mariage...
