A soldier and a tree

Listen

Lyrics

Now the birds, now the swallows, now the partridges,
now the partridges are singing more and more:
– Wake up, master, wake up, my good master,
wake up and embrace my body, tall and straight as a cypress,
with a white throat, and with breasts like tiny lemons,
fresh as the water that flows off molten snow.
– Fair maid, won’t you let me sleep a little,
because my master has me on watch tonight
to be killed or possibly enslaved.
But praise be to God and the Virgin!
I unsheathed my damascene sword,
slayed a thousand and enslaved a thousand more.
One got away from me, and him even wounded.
[But he had the wings of an eagle and the speed of a hare.
I took a pathway, a narrow path
and there I came upon a tree, a tree as tall as a cypress.
– Take me, tree. Take me, cypress.
– How can I take you, how can I hold you?
Here’s my root, tie up your horse,
here are my branches, hang up your armour,
here’s my shadow, lie down in it and sleep
you can pay the rent when you awaken:
three urns of water for my roots.]

Original Lyrics

– Πώς να σε δεχτώ, πώς να σε καρτερέσω;

Notes

It’s hard to identify a point of origin for songs like these, which are sung in so many places; Pachtikos,  one of the first scholars collecting and publishing folk songs, calls them ‘outsiders’ to contrast them from songs that are purely local. Miranda Terzopoulou (2016)
